Homestar Certified Assessments

Homestar has been developed by the New Zealand Green Building Council (NZGBC) and BRANZ.  Industry professionals across the entire building and construction sector including from government, contributed time and expertise in order to develop a single residential rating tool for New Zealands new and existing homes.

The certified Homestar rating is a star-rating, comparable with the energy ratings on appliances like fridges and dishwashers. The certified Homestar rating is calculated by assessing:

  • Energy, health and comfort
  •  Water
  •  Waste
  •  Home management
  •  Materials
  •  Site

Homestar helps people to make better decisions about their homes.

Buyers and renters are able to make energy efficiency and eco friendliness part of their purchase/lease decisions.

Sellers can showcase the superior quality of a home with a high certified Homestar rating. The rating can be displayed on the website.

People building or renovating can get clear advice on the best energy efficiency and eco friendly measures to incorporate into their home.

Visit the Homestar website for more information.

Benefits of a high certified Homestar rating.

  • A house with a high star rating will be more energy efficient and therefore will cost less to heat and cool.
  • In general it will be more comfortable to live in and healthier.
  • Buyers and tenants are willing to pay more for a house with a high star rating.
  • A house with a high star is better for the environment too.

Who does the Homestar Certified Assessments

Homestar Certified Assessments are performed by Homestar Certified Assessors.  These Assessors are trained by the New Zealand Green Building Council (NZGBC).

Homestar is independently administered by the New Zealand Green Building Council, a not for profit, industry owned association.

Homestar Certified Assessors use a sophisticated computer program to analyze your home and determine its rating.

When to get an certified Homestar rating .

It is only possible to get a certified Homestar rating once a house is built or renovated.

However, Snug Homes provides the unique opportunity to get advice beforehand, in the design stage.

In this stage is it generally easy to incorporate the recommendations at minimal costs and aim for a high star rating.

Ask your Architect or Designer for Homestar advice by Snug Homes.

As soon as the concept plans are drawn and the proposed structures and materials of the walls, ceilings, roof etc. are determined the plans can be assessed by Snug Homes and a concept star rating can be calculated.

You will receive recommendations how to gain a higher star rating.

After all or parts of the recommendations are incorporated in the final design and the house is built, the house will be inspected and the certified Homestar rating can be awarded.

The cost of a Homestar Certified Assessment by Snug Homes Ltd is $ 750 excl GST.

Travel costs may apply.
